Windows Vista Boot Process Overview

Windows Vista Boot Process Overview

Author: arun

The Windows Vista™ boot process differs from Windows® XP in the way the operating system is located and initialized. Start-up begins with the BIOS loading the Master Boot Record (MBR) on the bootable disk. The MBR in turn loads the Partition Boot Record (PBR) on the active partition. So far, Windows Vista remains relatively unchanged.

Windows Vista is different from XP starting by the fact the PBR code written by Windows Vista no longer looks for Ntldr. The new boot loader in Windows Vista is Bootmgr. This component loads the Boot Configuration Database (BCD), which in turn loads an OS loader boot application (Winload.exe, in the case of Windows Vista). Finally, the OS loader application is responsible for initializing the kernel. This process is illustrated below.

You can think of this change in two elements:

The two key actions performed by Ntldr in previous Windows versions have been divided between two components:

1. Bootmgr reads the boot configuration, including device and path locations.

2. WindowsSystem32Winload.exe initializes the kernel.

The boot configuration stored by Boot.ini in previous Windows versions is now stored in an extensible database, BootBCD, the Boot Configuration Database (BCD).

These changes are significant because of the impact they have:

1. The boot process can be extended to support other applications, such as other operating systems or other versions of the OS.

2. Only nonversion-specific components are stored in the root of the active partition. This means that theoretically Windows Vista could be installed on a machine running some future Windows version with the same boot structure, and it would not break the boot process for that future version. With legacy Windows, installing an older Windows version last causes the newer version to fail on start-up. This is due to version-specific code improvements in Ntldr.

3. Tool-oriented boot entries can be supported to offer maintenance options on boot when a previous start-up failed. In the past, Windows supported an menu provided by a target operating system. This new structure can make tools available earlier during the boot process, meaning that they are available even if all OS-specific boot entries are damaged. The Windows Memory Diagnostic tool is provided in the boot menu in this way.

BCD Store

The Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store contains boot configuration parameters and controls how the operating system is started in Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. These parameters were previously in the Boot.ini file in BIOS-based operating systems or in the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) entries in Extensible Firmware Interface-based operating systems. You can use the Bcdedit.exe command line tool to affect the Windows code which runs in the pre-operating system environment by adding, deleting, editing, and appending entries in the BCD store. Bcdedit.exe is located in the WindowsSystem32 directory of the Windows Vista partition.

The BCD is a database used by Bootmgr. It contains the functions of Boot.ini and is located in the {ActivePartition}boot folder

Bcdedit.exe

You can use Bcdedit.exe to modify the Windows code which runs in the pre-operating system environment by adding, deleting, editing, and appending entries in the BCD store. Bcdedit.exe is located in the WindowsSystem32 directory of the Windows Vista partition.

Boot.ini Compared to BCD

BCD eliminates the need for Boot.ini in Windows Vista, although Boot.ini is still present on dual-boot systems for backwards compatibility. Because the BCD boots to the boot environment first instead of Ntldr, the location of Ntldr is not verified unless a legacy operating system is chosen.

Configuration Tools

The BCD store can be modified or repaired using several tools:

System Properties in Control Panel

SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe

Msconfig

Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) Startup Repair

Bcdedit.exe

Bootrec.exe

Most of these tools enable you to perform simple tasks, such as setting a boot menu timeout, setting a default operating system, or configuring boot options such as /SOS and /SAFEBOOT. Others are repair-oriented tools; Startup Repair and Bootrec.exe, in particular, provide automated mechanisms for fixing problems in the BCD.

Bcdedit.exe is the main tool for detailed BCD store modifications. You can use Bcdedit to change Bootmgr options; add boot, delete, and edit boot entries; import and export the BCD store; and create a new store if it becomes significantly damaged. Bcdedit.exe is located in the WindowsSystem32 directory of the Windows Vista partition and is also available in WinRE.

BCD Store Location

The BCD store is a registry hive, stored as BootBCD on the active partition. This hive is loaded but hidden from view in Regedit.exe within Windows Vista. The store is loaded to the following registry location: HKLMBCD00000000.

You can also view the store manually in WinRE by loading the hive from the Boot folder. To obtain a copy of the hive on a running system, use the Bcdedit /export filename command to export a hive file for offline examination. This command exports the BCD store to a file called filename in the current directory.

Related Components

Msconfig

Msconfig is the preferred PSS UI tool for managing boot settings. The tool supports BCD and allows the user to enumerate all BCD objects in the system store. It allows certain elements to be altered for each OS object, including debug settings, safe mode settings, and other popular PSS options. It cannot be used with the WinRE console; Bcdedit needs to be used in these cases.

Bcdedit.exe

Bcdedit.exe is a command line tool that can be used to manage BCD settings. In summary, Bcdedit.exe is a replacement for Bootcfg.exe. However, it is enhanced for better scripting and to expose some of the more powerful features of BCD that bootcfg.exe did not expose for manipulating Boot.ini. Bcdedit.exe is designed to work on previous operating systems and in recovery environments.

NVIDIA Graphics Card Overclocking

NVIDIA Graphics Card Overclocking

Author: Molly Smith

In the P4 era, CPU performance often comes up to our expectation while the video card is complained much more in the process of actual operation and playing 3D games. Then the enthusiasts who seek an increase in the performance of their computers think of overclocking, and today video adapter overclocking is nothing new to us.

Some people may tell that we can use some software such as PowerStrip or NVTweak to execute the graphic card overclocking. Yes, we can make it by loading them, but in my opinion, with its complex function, PowerStrip or NVTweak is a tool for masters-hand, not for all users, especially green hands.

Here, I introduce a very simple way to your NVIDIA Graphics Card overclocking.

No hurry to search and download PowerStrip or NVTweak from the net, the NVIDIA video card driver itself possesses the overclocking feature.

In the previous Detonator drivers, there used to be AGP settings function, the Core and Memory clock adjustment functions, but the functions have been hidden later. Now the commonly used Detonator 40 driver also has such hidden functions, and it is very easy to enable them.

For instance, we open the clock rate Setting item. On the Start menu, click run and input "regedit" press the Enter key then the Registry is open. Find the item "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareNVIDIA CorporationGlobal", and right click "Global" branch, create a new key "NVTweak" (if the "NVTweak" exists, no need to create one). After that, right click "NVTweak", create a new dword key, named "CoolBits". Finally, set the key "CoolBits" as "3", and then you can open the hidden overclocking option of NVIDIA graphic adapter.

If you think opening the Registry is a nuisance, input the below words to a text file editor such as the WordPad built-in Windows.

REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARENVIDIA CorporationGlobalNvTweak] "CoolBits"=dword: 00000003 The next step is to save this file with reg as its file extension (e.g. nv.reg). Double click nv.reg file then these contents can be run into Registry. What we mentioned above is risky, please be careful with overclocking!

RAM upgrade: How much is the best for your computer

RAM upgrade: How much is the best for your computer

Author: Lesley Lyon

The gainful process for upgrading the computer is addition of RAM that will speed up the running of the slothful computer. The computers will be purchased with more than sufficient RAM. But after some years this will become insufficient due to the new programmers that crop up. More memory power is required for the latest operating systems. When a computer has insufficient RAM, it changes the spill over data very often from the hard drive and thus reduces the performance of the computer.

There may be various reasons for the slow performance of a computer. One among them is the RAM capacity. It is advised to check up the RAM immediately when the computer breaks down. How can the requirement of RAM be verified? It is very simple. Just go to the windows task manager and then press Ctrl+Alt+Del to go to the performance tab. The vista users should just click start task manager. If the figure indication is zero next to Available in the case of windows and Free in the case of Vista, then it is a must that the RAM has to be upgraded.

In general, 1 GB RAM is quite sufficient for the users of average Windows XP. The computer that is utilized for running programs like functioning with images and burning of CD’s with Nero Express programme will have a better speed with 1 GB RAM than the 512 MB RAM. But a minimum of 2 GB RAM is required for those users who utilize the computer with the programmers to work with the huge graphic files or digital video. Here again, it is recommended to have 2 GB RAM for a better performance for those computers which are to be upgraded to windows vista.

There are various types of RAM available in the market. Some of them are DDR, DDR2 and DDR3. Those RAM which are produced with the new technology will definitely have a fast performance. But, in general almost many mother boards do accept only one kind of RAM. Hence, it is a must for the user to check up the manual of the computer regarding the type of the RAM that can be installed and its procedure before finalizing the capacity of the RAM and its type. There are also various online equipment available to get the information handy regarding the usage of the type of the RAM in the computer.

Many of the computers that are upgraded now use mostly the dual channel memory. This is mainly due to its extreme good performance. Thus the preference now goes to install two numbers of 512 MB RAM than one number of 1 GB RAM. Here again, the documentation has to be checked before taking up the installation work of RAM. It is also safe to buy quality product without minding paying of a little higher cost rather than going for an inferior quality.

Build a Pc - 4 Ways to Reduce the Cost of Your Pc Build

Build a Pc - 4 Ways to Reduce the Cost of Your Pc Build

Author: lee jones

When you build a computer, you are boss at this job. You make the first decision and the final one. You have the power. Along with this power, you also have the opportunity to save a bit of money. With pre-built computers, someone else is the boss. They have the power. They make the decisions and you pay them for those decisions. If you are first, willing seize that power and secondly, have the patience to be a smart shopper, I will show you 4 Ways to Save Money When You Build a PC.

Buy OEM - If you read my article "How OEM Parts Can Save You Money on Your PC Build or Upgrade", you know that I explained exactly that. If you didn't, buying Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM parts for short, is an excellent way to save money. Basically, manufacturers sell certain items in bulk to resellers. These items are not retail packaged and typically do not have user manuals. By eliminating the cost for packaging, the cost for the product drops, sometimes drastically. Don't concern yourself with manuals or software, because you can download these from the manufacturers website.

Rebates - Rebates are another way to save a few bucks when you build a PC. Now, be mindful, rebates can sometimes take as long as 8 weeks and even longer. It's not instant savings, but more like putting your money into a savings account that has a 0% interest rate. Manufacturers may offer rebates for new, discontinued, hard sell or basically any item it manufactures. That's irrelevant. What's relevant is the savings. Some rebates offer a 100% savings. I have to warn you though, rebates are tricky. Manufacturers are banking on the fact that you will either not submit the rebate, or not comply with the rules for submitting the rebate. Click Here for a great article I wrote about submitting a rebate form and getting your rebate check. It's a good read.

Open Box - Open box items are essentially brand new items that have been removed from their retail packaging for some reason or another. Sometimes it's a display item. Sometimes it's been returned, but never used. What ever the reason, open box item prices may be ridiculously reduced. With that being said, here are the pros and cons. Pros: reduced cost, same warranty, new item. Cons: may be missing parts (ie. cords, adapters etc.), may have been used, may lack literature. It's really boils down to you, Boss, to weigh the pros and cons and make the decision.

Sales - I know this seems obvious, but it's not. How many times have you purchased something, just to see it somewhere else on sale? I'm not talking $5 off, I mean a good sale. This is where planning, research and patience plays an important part in you saving money. The first computer I built was so expensive, because I "failed to plan", so I "planned to fail". I didn't fail in building the computer. The computer is beautiful. What I failed in was saving money. Don't you make that mistake. Search out sales, be it at local computer stores or online. Plan. Be patient. Shop. Save.

So, there you have it. Four incredibly easy ways to save a substantial amount of money, building your own computer.

Overclocking Made Easy

Just imagine if the only difference between the two liter sports saloon and the 1.4 family hatchback was the badge on the back. Imagine a car manufacturer that fitted all its cars with the same engine but detuned those in the budget models to protect the price premiums at the top of the range. Imagine if the red line limit on the rev counter was so conservatively marked that you could comfortably exceed it by 50 per cent without damaging the engine.

It sounds implausible, but read ‘Intel’ for ‘car manufacturer’ and we’ve pretty much described the state of the processor industry for the last decade. For years now, power users have known how to squeeze more performance from their processors for free, by pushing them to their true limits instead of those artificially set by the chip makers. This black art is known as overclocking and if you ever wondered what it is all about, this may be your last chance to find out before Intel plugs the loophole forever.

The pace of all processors depends on their clock speed – the higher the clock speed, the faster your programs run. In the days of the 486, this clock speed was the same as the bus speed, and pioneering overclockers could only increase the processor speed by increasing the speed of the entire bus. The development of the 486DX2 and DX4, however, saw the introduction of the concept of a clock multiplier and with it a whole new way to overclock.

These chips ran on a fixed multiplier of X2 or X3 for the DX2 and DX4 respectively but when the Pentium was developed, CPU’s could suddenly be configured to use any multipliers from x1.5 to x3 simply by changing a few jumpers on the motherboard. Thus a P150 ran on a 50MHz bus with a multiplier of x3 but a P166 used a 66MHz bus and a 2.5x multiplier.

Silicon Twins

The important thing to realize is that both systems use essentially the same piece of silicon in the processor. When the chips come off the assembly line, Intel does not know in advance what the speed rating of each one will be because the difference is not architectural. Production batches are graded for quality and a rating that is thought to be safely within the tolerances of that batch.

Intel’s own grading criteria are probably the most stringent in the industry but there is still a degree of leeway that overclockers can exploit, but there are two other factors that increase this safety margin still further.

The first is that during the life of a particular chip family, manufacturing processes often improve. For example, the resolution of the etching process used to define the circuit lines of the processor may increase. This allows a smaller die size, which dissipates less heat and can therefore be run at a higher speed.

These manufacturing advances may occur ahead of marketing demands and, to satisfy the need for large volumes of chips in the budget market sector, Intel has often resorted to marking CPU’s with speed ratings lower than the actual limits imposed by the quality of the silicon. This is why new processors usually debut with enormous heat sinks and chip fans but later steppings of the same CPU have smaller heat sinks and may even avoid the need for a fan altogether.

The second trick in the overclocker’s armoury is that of supply voltages to the CPU. As already mentioned, the P166 uses the same silicon as the P150 but when Intel first developed the P166, the company was unable to get it to perform reliably using the P150 supply voltage of 3.3 volts. This is because the lower the voltage, the smaller the difference between a high and a low signal, and at high clock speeds this can result in signal noise.

The solution was to release the P166 at 3.45 volts. Modern motherboards allow the core and I/O voltages to be altered manually and often the only way to overclock successfully is to use a higher supply voltage. If the increase is too great, this can damage the processor permanently but a five percent voltage increase is normally within the listed operating range of the chip and can significantly improve signal quality at high clock speeds.

Fickle Electrons

Computer folklore has become filled over the years with tales of processors and other system components that have choked on this free lunch and suffered permanent damage. Your CPU can be destroyed instantaneously if you set the supply voltage too high but there is another side effect of overclocking that takes longer to manifest. This is the phenomenon of electromigration. This occurs at high temperatures over long periods of time as the electrochemical structure of the circuits on the silicon gradually becomes eroded. This shortens the lifespan of the chip and the higher the temperature, the more pronounced the effect.

The Intel marketing machine has tried hard to make users aware of the risk of electromigration and to link it to overclocking, but in reality, it is a problem that affects all processors to some extent. Overclocked CPU’s are more prone to it only insofar as they are hotter, and this will depend on the degree of the overclocking and the effectiveness of any additional cooling measures installed.

In cases where the same silicon is used, there is no difference in the heat dissipation of an overclocked CPU and an official Intel CPU at the same clock speed, so the rate of electromigration is the same. In any case, Intel CPU’s have a normal operating temperature range that extends up to 80 degrees Celsius and at this temperature they have a life expectancy of 10 years. Almost all processors – even overclocked ones – run significantly below this temperature and are obsolete long before their 10 years is up anyway.

More significant than the bogeyman of electromigration, however, is the issue of system stability. Very often, an overclocked system will boot up successfully but will then crash or hang more frequently than before. Often this is because the other components in the system are unable to adjust to the faster pace. If the bus speed has been increased, SCSI controllers may refuse to work and other interface cards, particularly graphics cards will also get hotter and suffer signal timing conflicts. Some EIDE interfaces may be driven to run too fast for their hard disks and CD-ROM’s – this can be solved by changing to a lower mode for each device but only at the cost of decreasing overall performance.

To be sure that your system can operate at the new clock speed, it is important to increase the clock in small increments and to test it thoroughly at the new speed before attempting to move to the next one up. A long recorded game of Quake is a good way to put a processor through its paces.

The Truth About Facebook

There are lots of social networking websites that you can participate in today like MySpace and Bebo, and they all have their pluses and minuses. The best way to choose a community to participate in is to evaluate the people who have already joined. To me, Facebook is certainly one of the best internet meeting places for networking, both socially and professionally. I also use Linked In and Myspace. Of all the social networks, Facebook is the best place when it comes to all around marketing and networking.
I have been using Facebook for the past two years, and it is a first-class tool for marketing to add to your marketing arsenal. Here are 10 tips to use on Facebook to introduce new people to your business for FREE!
1. Make an Attractive Profile: This is absolutely the FIRST thing that you must do to get noticed on Facebook . Think of your Facebook profile as part of your branding. A powerful profile will include a professional picture of you. Don't use the one of you dressed as Santa Claus, unless that's what your selling. Make sure your new Facebook profile is complete. Your profile should include your contact information, your website address (this is really important), education, work experience and your personal interests. A complete profile is the only way to go.
2. Add Friends: This is what sets Facebook apart - the ability meet new people, build relationships and sustain them. The more relationships you develop, the more satisfying your marketing efforts will be. You can use Facebook's own tools to search for friends that already belong to Facebook. Once you add your friends, you can search for kindred spirits. Make their acquaintance, become their friend, build a relationship. One great thing on Facebook is that you can see friends of your friends. This will help you build a extensive network in no time.
3. Join Facebook Groups: You can join groups within Facebook that are similar to what you do. There are groups for consultants, councilors, and instructors. Almost every conceivable type of professional service provider has some kind of group on Facebook. I belong to several Facebook groups and have made hundreds of new contacts this way.
4. Create your Own Group: Can’t find a group that really fits your style? Create your own! You can add members, publish articles, begin some great discussions, and probably start quite a few important new relationships. And even if you find great group to belong to, start your own. This gives you the platform to be the trendsetter!
5. Syndicate your Blog Using RSS: You can syndicate your own blog on your Facebook profile page. This in essence means that every time you make a post, it will automatically show up on your profile page. More Exposure leads to More Readers leads to More Leads creates More Business. And the bonus is the back links to your site. I syndicate headlines from my 3 blogs on Facebook.
6. Comment on Other Peoples Profiles: Are you a follower or devotee of someone’s work? Reach out to them on Facebook! Many of my friends check their Facebook messages more constantly than their email. They are also more likely to respond to Facebook messages. Don’t feel quite right sending out a message to someone you don’t know? Don't worry! Leave them a “just saying hi!” or “I love your work!” message on their wall. All profiles come with “virtual walls” where business associates can leave a comment. The more comments you leave on your friend's profiles the more exposure you get!
7. List your Events: Speaking somewhere or Hosting a Teleseminar? Add an events page and invite everyone you know. You can even see who RSVPed and get feedback from your attendees. Marketing doesn’t get any simpler (or more inexpensive!) than this.
8. Send Virtual Gifts: Want to show your appreciation for someone? Send them a virtual gift. You can choose from a teddy bear to an egg that hatches a surprise gift over 4 days (plus tons of others). With all the Facebook applications for gift giving available, what are you waiting for. This is a clever way to build and nurture new relationships!
9. Use Some Cool Apps: Facebook has literally dozens of applications that were built just for the site. Quizzes, games, challenges and more. When you use an application, you get to invite your friends to use these cool mini applications (Apps). So just like number 8 above, this allows you another way to stay connected to your friends on Facebook. Again, this helps you maintain and nurture new relationships.
10. Create a Community: Perhaps Facebook’s greatest benefit is that it allows you to build a community. It provides you a group of people who are perpetually connected to you, and these friends are open to hearing what you have to say. Write on people’s walls, have conversation, and introduce them to each other. Start building your brand and leveraging Facebook for business building!
Facebook is a fantastic place to introduce yourself to lots of new people who may also become customers and/or clients. Just keep one thing in mind: don't get too carried away and spend all your time there. Facebook is a tool, part of your online marketing plan. Use the tips above, use them wisely and have a little fun at the same time.
